This is fourth in a series of profiles of Democratic candidates running for president in 2020.  While I have made every effort to appear impartial, my personal bias may bleed through and for that I apologize in advance.  Other profiles can be found here: Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren.

Update: Kamala Harris dropped out of the presidential race in early December 2019.

Like many others, I first noticed Kamala Harris during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings.  Her composure and eloquence impressed me, as did her ability to make a devastating point with steely precision such as when she asked Kavanaugh, regarding the abortion law question, if he knew of any laws “that the government has power to make over the male body[.]”

As of the date of this writing, Harris is #4 in most polls.  We are fortunate to have accurate birth information for Harris; a birth certificate was provided to the Mountain Astrologer magazine.  Her Sun is in late Libra, the sign of tact and diplomacy.  The Libra personality can be the consummate salesperson as there is an innate sense of what people are looking for and an ability to morph into the personality that will provide it.  This often makes them extremely likeable but depending on other factors, the need to be liked does not build the kind of resilience that is required for the presidency.

Fortunately for Harris, she was born under an Aries Full Moon, ruled by the fire of Mars.  The balance and interplay between the “iron fist in the velvet glove” of the Libra Sun with the fiery Aries Moon has been interesting to watch.  She disarms the enemy with a smile and then attacks with that pointed aggression which no-one sees coming.  Her Scorpio Mercury gives her an intensity of thought and communication, which becomes a part of her personality since it has just completed a conjunction.

Gemini is rising in the chart.  Gemini is not a strong sign – it’s curious and interested in everything, and can be a bit of a shapeshifter, adapting to the circumstances in which it finds itself.  However, in Harris’s chart the North Node of future fate is placed nearly exactly on the ascendant.  This is a position of great significance – prominent North Node placements are associated with a strong sense of one’s destiny.  This often but not always correlates with a successful outcome but that powerful sense of purpose has been evident in Harris’s career thus far.

Harris’s chart does not contain much water – the element that bestows empathy and sensitivity.  While her Libra Sun is able to pick up on cues from others, there is not an emotional connection in Harris’s chart other than her Scorpio Mercury which can be more about intensity and revealing Truth than in a true emotional connection.  However, Chiron (wounding and healing) is opposite her stellium of Uranus and Pluto with Venus, denoting an individual whose great wound can serve as a powerful force of healing and aid to others.  In addition, Chiron sits in the tenth house of public life, suggesting her role as a mentor and healer of a broken prosecutorial system which she attempted to fix by introducing programs for crime prevention.  I see tenth house Chiron in this quote:

The job of a progressive prosecutor is to look out for the overlooked, to speak up for those whose voices aren’t being heard, to see and address the causes of crime, not just their consequences. It is to recognize that not everyone needs punishment, that what many need, quite plainly, is help.

There is a strong thread of fire running through the chart, with the Mars ruled Full Moon, and Mars itself in Leo.  Mars in Leo possesses a strong drive to make oneself known – to achieve fame in some way and ideally, to accomplish this through great works.  Mars in Harris’s chart is opposed by Saturn, suggesting someone whose aspirations and desires (Mars) are blocked by outside forces.  For some, this kind of opposition can be the end of their hopes and dreams, but others continue fighting against the oppression of Saturn and use it towards great success.  That seems to be the case here.

Conclusion

One of the reasons that I wasn’t surprised by the 2012 win of Donald Trump is the fact that we are heading into a time marked by the return of transiting Pluto (destruction and rebirth) to its place in the US chart.  I have written much about this – the eruption into the mainstream of rage and racism and darkness which had previously been hidden to a great extent is a sign of the Plutonic influence under which we find ourselves now.  The exact return of Pluto to its place in the US chart will occur in 2023-2024, while the next president is in office.

As a black woman, Harris has the potential to be the most vilified figure in a nation which is struggling over issues of racism and the equality and self-empowerment of women.  A Harris presidency would, more than any other candidate, bring out the worst of the fissures that could decimate the ability of the US to govern itself.  And therefore more than any other candidate, she fits right into the US Pluto Return scenario.

In the leadup to the primaries she has a number of Jupiter (good fortune) transits which will open doors and improve her likeability.  Transiting Saturn will challenge her Sun and Moon for much of next year which could be problematic in creating obstacles, but Harris has not shown herself to be someone for whom obstacles create a problem.  And Pluto, the planet of transformation, harmonizes with her Jupiter next year which often signifies success in meeting one’s goals.

The synastry between Harris’s chart and the US chart has some interesting factors. Her Saturn conjoins the Moon of the US chart, suggesting difficulty connecting with the heart of the people, and her own Moon squares the US Pluto.  This latter factor is extremely challenging and generally suggestions in a personal relationship that there will be a major blow-up of some kind.

But while these factors are definitely challenging they do fit into the scenario of the US Pluto return.  It’s too early to tell but I I do believe that Harris has the ability to prevail.  While I like her a great deal, I do worry about what this would mean for the country.  But when there is as much hidden conflict as we have in the US today, sometimes the only way out is through.
