One of the more significant planetary cycles of 2019 is a powerful square (90 degree) dynamic between Jupiter and Neptune. Jupiter and Neptune are connected through their mutual rulership of the sign Pisces: Jupiter is the traditional ruler and Neptune the modern ruler of Pisces. Jupiter and Neptune share an expansive view of the world, and a desire to bring true meaning into our lives. However, Jupiter’s focus is more on the expansion of the Self through a pursuit of meaning and Truth whereas Neptune’s role is to inspire us to break free of the boundaries of the limitations of this material world and the individual Self.
Because Jupiter and Neptune are natural allies, even the stressful aspects like the square can bring about a swell of creativity and bliss. Jupiter’s expansive and buoyant nature gives a boost to Neptune’s inspiration to expand the inner spiritual heart. The only danger here is that Jupiter is especially powerful in the other sign which it rules: Sagittarius, and Neptune is in Pisces, the sign co-ruled by Jupiter and Neptune. All of this magic and bliss and creativity and inspiration is wonderful for writers, musicians, artists – anyone practicing in a creative field or exploring spirituality. It is less wonderful for keeping our feet on the ground and making sensible decisions.
Fortunately, during this first phase of the Jupiter/Neptune square (January 10-30) we have a stellium of four planets and luminaries in grounded Capricorn: Saturn, Mercury, Pluto and the Sun. Saturn, the planet that teaches us to master the material world, is in its own sign of Capricorn where it is creating boundaries as quickly as Jupiter and Neptune can unravel them. This may feel a bit nerve-racking as we swerve from organization (Saturn/Capricorn) to letting our imagination and spiritual world expand (Jupiter/Neptune) but as we become more comfortable with the dualistic energies this can be an incredible time of focused magic and creativity.
Here are the important dates for the square between Jupiter and Neptune:
January 13, 2019: Jupiter square Neptune
April 10, 2019: Jupiter turns retrograde
June 16, 2019: Jupiter retrograde squares Neptune
September 22, 2019: Jupiter squares Neptune retrograde

[…] Two of the most significant planetary cycles for 2019 are the challenging square alignment between Jupiter’s expansive tendencies and Neptune’s penchant to transcend (or avoid) material reality. The “hard angle” planetary interactions such as the square (90 degrees) and opposition (180 degrees) tends to give us more of the challenging aspects of the planetary cycle. The Jupiter and Neptune dance dissolving the restrictions of the material world could potentially become more of a distraction into the world of self-deception and illusion, encouraged by Jupiter’s desire to continue to expand and seek larger and ever greater experiences.
