Despite lots of hysteria in some circles over Comet Elenin as a harbinger of doom, and more predictions by evangelical preacher Harold Camping that the world would erupt in flames on October 21st – we are still here. Comet Elenin broke down into small pieces as it zipped by Earth, and with the disintegration of the comet the theory that Elenin was actually Niburu, the lost planet disintegrated as well. And Mr. Camping’s prediction that the apocalypse would occur yesterday appears to have been incorrect – for the third time. Now that is persistence!!
We seem to be in the midst of more “end of the world” hysteria than at any time since the Millenium. Perhaps this is because as word spreads of the end of the Mayan calendar on the Winter Solstice 2012 it becomes tempting to frame the concept of “the end of the world” in our own reality. For Christians perhaps it’s the Rapture; for conspiracy theorists it is the return of our brethren from space. For followers of New Age spirituality it’s Ascension into other dimensions.
There’s no doubt that there is an acceleration of energy as we hurtle more completely into the Age of Aquarius. The shift of Uranus, ruling electromagnetic energy, into Aries which is so dynamic and initiatory has intensified the experience of human life. It’s impossible to deny that Something Important is happening on the planet, but the experience is larger than anything we can hold in our human brains. But still we try.
I could be wrong, but I don’t believe that the world will end on the Winter Solstice next year. But I do believe that life as we know it, and civilization as we have understood it, is undergoing a major transformation. For many people, having lost their jobs and their homes, the world as they know it has already ended. And now something new must take its place.
The next three years are an important time for humans on planet Earth under the influence of the square formation of Uranus and Pluto, just as the 1960s were during the conjunction of those two transformational forces. Not one of us will be left unchanged. But is that the end of the world? For some perhaps – but it is also a new beginning.

I have seen definate signs that my world is ending this week….and i am so relieved, for the first time possibly ever, i am starting to be seen as i really am, not condemned by my own self judgement it seems i am becoming less subected to the false judgement of others. Although not yet out of challenging times, my hope, thanks to the good yet humbling words of others this week, showiing me that i am truly succeeding in my own healing, is well and truly alive :) and i so hope this is possible for you all too, blessings!
I have to agree. This is my current pet peeve.
My eyes were opened when I read “The Name Of the Rose” by Umberto Eco. I realized that, at least, ever since Jesus died there are people who think “the end is coming”. In the novel, it’s something like the end of the 12th century and many are scared that the end is near. They are shaking in their boots and The Inquisition is in full force. What a crock – each new generation thinks they will be the ones to explode into space. Yes, there are great changes – like there always are. There are so many people now with the connection of internet and cell phones that we can all get scared together in one mindset. Is this the mindset we want? Well, I don’t believe any of it. I could die any day – what’s the big deal? Does anyone really think that a switch will be pulled on a certain day, because ….ah… what’s that reason again?.. Oh, that’s right – there isn’t one.
I think the planets show how life goes on, as it always has. This is comforting to me. And reading Tarot cards have shown me that what looks like life changing events in the spread, is never near as bad as it seems.
Who wants this toxic, environmentally insane world we now live in to continue? People are experiencing cruel foreclosures on their own homes, and we are all facing the foreclosure of our common earth home unless we change, and change dramatically and fast and simultaneously.
We NEED this world to end if we are to LIVE.
Authentic transformation always involves a ‘death’ stage when what was ends, so that what will be can be born. How to do the death stage of authentic transformation is the challenge; as Barbara Marx Hubbard and others put it, we need to “hospice” the world that is, and “midwife” a new one. Astrologically, we need to dance with the Pluto-in-Capricorn breakdown of all the cultural systems that no longer serve the continuance of human life on earth energy; give the Uranian Aries catalytic change agents room to make their bold moves, and let the Aquarian shift from individual to the whole group happen.
As for the Mayan calendar, one interpretation is that this world actually ends in a week, on October 28, 2011.
The day before my birthday, which you can bet has me thinking.
Any way
I posted on the 10/28 day today, Mimi. But I doubt that the apocalyptic phase will be as extreme as that which you describe.
I believe we are on the threshold of new era. What is ahead for us will be outstanding for I think we will see a lot of changes , and we need to be
Ready. For we are about to enter a time of knowing.
